John McGeehan is the Founder and CEO of The Dorm, a young adult treatment community that has two locations, one on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City, New York and one near Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C.
For over a decade, John has been passionate about providing integrated, individualized and holistic treatment to young adults who are facing personal and clinical challenges that impact how they are able to move forward with independent lives.
John started his life in the Northeast, but moved abroad to Tokyo, Japan during his teenage years. It was there that he started his work as both an interventionist and treatment placement specialist, helping families seek therapeutic alternatives outside of Japan. Over a decade later, after many years of working with families in need and witnessing the transformation of his adolescent and young adult clients, John decided to found The Dorm in 2010. His vision was for The Dorm to offer a new approach to treatment with a greater holistic perspective and to offer a greater sense of community for clients undergoing treatment and recovery. Today, The Dorm serves a broad population of clients and their families who are overcoming challenges with mental illness, learning disorders and executive function, substance use, eating disorders and other diagnoses.
John holds a Master of Social Work degree from New York University as well as a specialty certification in substance abuse, intervention and related co-occurring disorders. He is a regular media contributor on issues related to recovery and young adult treatment including, most recently, as a guest on the ‘I Can’t Help You’ PodBean podcast with host Danny Conroy and as an expert interviewee in the WJLA episode on smartphone addiction with Scott Tayler of ABC7. In addition, John is a contributor to school-based prevention programs at secondary schools and parent associations across the eastern seaboard.
